Did you know?
The number of child laborers in India today is staggering—85 million. Of those, an estimated 40,000 work in the Kolhapur district in the state of Maharashtra. Many of these children have been sold or forced into dangerous, physically grueling occupations and into commercial sex work. Often, they come from broken homes, the result of a broken system that does not provide education or basic life necessities to the poorest levels of Indian society. Without intervention, these heartbreaking conditions will continue, and 18 hour work days with no hope of escape will be all these children will ever know.
Fortunately, there is hope. The Gandhi Worldwide Education Institute, in partnership with the NGO, AVANI, has been working to protect children from exploitation as child laborers, including a bi-monthly child labor rescue program, school for migrant children in brickyard labor camps, and a children’s home for rescued child laborers and the children of abandoned, divorced and widowed women. Once rescued, these children are provided with healthy food, clean clothes, a safe place to sleep and access to quality education.
In this uniquely connected time in history, we have the opportunity to help bring light those who so badly need it. Sales from The Gandhi For Children Bracelet benefit the Gandhi Worldwide Education Institute, and with your support the GWEI will be able to raise and allocate funds to several of its projects, foremost among which is the Gandhi Center For Learning in Kolhapur, India.
As Arun Gandhi has said, “Nobody really has the means to transform this whole world. We have to do little things that ultimately grow into big things and make a big difference”.
Through the simple gesture of purchasing The Gandhi For Children Bracelet, you have the opportunity to make a tangible difference, and help bring an end to these tragic conditions. The #GandhiBracelet is a constant reminder that the soul is healed by loving children, and features four colored beads:
