WE SING program of the Newburyport Choral Society
Loved by local audiences, the Newburyport Choral Society (NCS) is one of the oldest choral societies in the United States and one of the largest amateur organizations in New England. Attracting more than 100 singers each year, NCS is very much a community that shares the common bond of singing great works of art and bringing this joy to retirement centers, families with young children and North Shore audiences at an affordable cost . Members range in age from 10 to over 80, have diverse musical backgrounds, and work hard to achieve the high musical standards that are the hallmark of NCS concerts. As a non-profit educational arts organization, the Newburyport Choral Society has also developed a community based “WE SING” program that reaches out to area children who cannot afford private music lessons and where schools have made drastic cuts to their arts programs. Young students rarely have the opportunity to perform with professional orchestra musicians. Using the voice as an instrument, our WE SING programs train young people to listen and develop the self-awareness the leads to beautiful expression in music. Vocal music provides an opportunity to take the most private, most personal, most inward part of a person and share it with the world. We bridge the generation gap through the practice of working and listening together. It is empowering for children to work together on stage with adults. We are equal in the task of learning a new piece of music. And for the single and retired people in our chorus, having the opportunity to be around young people, is incalculable. Your support will help to foster this mission now and for future generations.
